Premium SMSs are based on special numbering, consisting of four or five digits, starting with the number 7 or 9. The following digits provide information about the cost of the sent text message.
Sending an SMS to a Premium number charges the sender with the appropriate gross amount. All users pay exactly the same fee for sending an SMS to the same number.
Thanks to premium text messages, mobile phone and smartphone users can access special services. The organizer receives a commission from the fee charged to the user for sending the SMS.
Many services offer various forms of entertainment based on Premium SMS, including access to websites, mobile games, ringtones and applications, paid articles, mobile versions of magazines and newspapers, or access to websites. In addition, micropayments allow conducting marketing campaigns, which are an important element of every company’s strategy, e.g., competitions, lotteries, urban games, subscriptions, etc.
Data from the Central Statistical Office show that in the third quarter of 2013, there were 56 million active mobile phone numbers registered in Poland. Compared to the third quarter of 2012, this is an increase of 5.4 percent.
Slightly more than half (54%) are prepaid numbers, or pay-as-you-go phones. The remaining 46% were purchased as part of a subscription.
Since the population of Poland is about 38 million people, this means that there are 1.45 phone numbers per inhabitant of our country!
The results also show that more than half of the respondents use the Direct Billing service at least several times a month. As many as 16.4% of respondents admit to sending such messages even several times a week.
